There was shock and consternation on Tuesday
evening last week when a man put up his unfaithful wife for sale at
Kamukunji market in Solai, Nakuru District.
The woman was brought to the market
strapped to a mkokoteni (push cart) with a rope with the man, Joseph,
shouting: "Bibi kwa bei nafuu! Nunua yeye kama unaweza. (A wife at cheap
price! Buy her if you can)".
In
his sale’s pitch, the man explained that the two had been married for
two years. They had a magnificent church wedding that was even attended
by the area MP.
Life was good
for them before they got their firstborn child. The woman, he
explained, used to be diligent with her domestic chores like cooking,
washing utensils, cleaning the house and taking care of her husband.
Carefree woman
Then
after delivering their first child she slackened in her duties and even
started forgetting to take a bath. The husband surprised his listeners
when he revealed that his wife even went for a week without touching
water. "She was not like that during our courtship," he complained. "Now
I’m fed up with her and she will no longer live in my house."
Joseph
said that whenever he complained about her laziness, the woman always
offered the excuse that she was too busy looking after the baby.
Sometimes he was forced to cook, clean the house and even washing her
clothes.
When they had
visitors, Joseph would first hide so that they did not know about his
henpecked status. He would later pretend to be coming out of the
bedroom. Sometimes neighbours would find him washing the baby or
cleaning the house while the wife reposed on the living-room seat. Some
laughed at him while others advised him to divorce her and marry a more
caring wife.
Whenever the
thought of divorce entered his head he would consult church elders for
advice and prayers. But after some time, Joseph started hearing rumours
from neighbours that his wife was being unfaithful.
Joseph
decided to try and catch her red-handed. On Tuesday last week, he
informed her that he was going to a church meeting that could take four
hours.
The wife beamed with
excitement and hurriedly prepared his departure. They bade goodbye and
the hubby pretended to go past the gate but instead went around the
fence to the backyard where he patiently waited.
While there, he heard the wife making a
phone call. Her lover soon arrived on a bicycle and the two went into
the house, forgetting to lock the door from inside.
Joseph gave them time and then stormed
into the house. He found them in the living room caressing each other.
The wife was down her panties and a red brassiere while her lover was
still fully clothed. The wife’s lover escaped through the window while
she was left with her mouth agape.
"Wewe
ni malaya na mzembe na sikutaki tena kwa nyumba yangu! Leo utailaani
siku uliyozaliwa (You are an indolent prostitute and I don’t want to
see you in my house again! Today you will curse the day you were
born!)," Joseph shouted. The wife tried to reach for her clothes but he
tore them into pieces.
Going
berserk, he carried her on his shoulders to a handcart. He bound her
hand and foot and pushed her away after some beatings.
The
wife cried and tried to seek mercy but her pleas fall on deaf ears.
Joseph went shouting and calling for ‘buyers’ all the way to the
market.
Luckily for the woman, intervened and the two were taken to the local police station.
